Glossary of terms

• RNY Gastric Bypass - Weight loss surgery where the surgeon reduced the size of the stomach to around the size of a medium egg.   At the same time the roux limb of the small intestine is attached to the new stomach effectively bypassing the old stomach and a portion of the small intestine.Click here for clinical definition from duke.
• LAP Band Gastric Bypass - Weight loss surgery where the surgeon places a plastic band around the upper portion of the stomach.   The pouch can be inflated or deflated causing the opening that food can go through to be larger or smaller.   This gives the paitent the sensation of fullness, thus causing weight loss.Click here for clinical definition from duke.
• Duodenal Switch  Gastric  Bypass - Weight loss surgery where the surgeon reduces the size of the stomach but keeps the original pyloric valve intact.   They also bypass a significant portion of the intestine thus causing mal-absorption which initiates weight loss. Click here for more information.
• Pyloric Valve - This is the valve that is in between the stomach and the small intestine.   It regulates how fast food can enter the small intestine from the stomach.
